What is Health?

The million dollar question…and one of the most difficult to answer.  Health means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.  Each interpretation is valid in its own way depending on the context and perspective of the person.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…so is health!

Herstel Health chooses to take a 360 degree approach to health.  Referred to as Deep Health by Dr. John Berardi, it is practice and acknowledgement that multiple factors influence our overall health and rarely is a single area completely responsible for our health issues as all are deeply entwined and strongly connected.

Like a professional sports team, players have multiple coaches focusing on specific areas: strength coaches, nutrition coaches, mental coaches, position coaches, coordinators, and a head coach.  All working together to get the best out of each athlete.  Herstel Health uses a similar approach, clients benefit from coaches helping a person improve their metabolic AND mental health collectively and congruently.  Coaches check in with one another weekly to remain in synch to provide the besting coaching for the client’s needs.

What Is Mental Health?

Feeling Unwell and Thinking Unwell

Mental health includes everything from our emotional, physical, social, spiritual, and behavioral wellbeing.  How we think navigates how we feel and how we feel dictates our behaviors.

“Our lives are only as good as our ability to regulate our own thoughts and emotions and handle the stresses of life.”

The inability to do so often creeps into our daily lives.  Our wellbeing, relationships, performance, work, sleep, and ultimately our health begin to suffer from our inability to do so and unhealthy habits begin to form.  Before long obstacles such as anxiety, depression, lack of motivation and willpower begin to overwhelm individuals, shutting them down from achieving their health and life goals.

According to the American Psychiatric Association mental health is the foundation of wellbeing and largely influences our physical health.  Understanding how the human brain works can not only improve a person’s overall life but can be the catalyst of change in their physical health.

The mind-body connection can best be summed up as…

“Whatever affects one will affect the other.”

During your program you will learn the neuroscience behind habits and how to undo them and build new positive habits quicker which results in better health.

To get healthy and expect our body to function normally we must get our mind right.  At Herstal Health we treat both aspects as equally important as one by itself cannot be sustained without the other.

What is Metabolic Health?

Over 90% of Americans are approximated not metabolically healthy

1 in 3 adults are estimated to have metabolic syndrome.  Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together.  These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

A person experiencing metabolic syndrome is estimated to be 5 times more likely to have type 2 diabetes, 2 times more likely to have heart disease, and upwards of 4 times more likely to have a stroke.  Obesity and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases are commonplace.

Metabolism refers to all bodily processes that take the food we eat and convert it into energy.  Metabolic health is how well we do that.  A metabolically healthy person is able to consume, digest, and absorb nutrients from a variety of foods without experiencing distress or abnormalities in blood sugar, body fat, inflammation, and hormones (insulin, ghrelin, etc) which reduces risk of chronic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Metabolic health is initially gauged using five measurable factors:

  1. Abdominal fat
  2. Triglyceride levels
  3. Fasting blood glucose (sugar)
  4. Blood pressure
  5. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels

Values considered abnormal in any of these areas may indicate poor metabolic function.  Abnormality in multiple areas is often a sign of metabolic syndrome.

Here’s the good news!  We can fix this; YOU can fix this because your body has an evolutionary ability to heal itself when we set it up for success.  Proper nutrition, sufficient exercise, and ample rest will give your body everything it needs to stabilize metabolic health, restore to a vigorous state, and eventually experience the best version of itself.

Why Choose Us?

We consider the whole person.  The mind and the body.  The yin and the yang, so to speak.  Improving both together creates a harmonious state where you can thrive.  The human being is an amazing organism with a tremendous capacity for self-healing whether regenerative growth from injury or fighting pathogenic invasion.   Much of the illness and chronic disease we experience are rooted in metabolic and mental disfunction.   Barring unforeseen external factors optimal, lasting health is often well within our control, our bodies want to heal themselves…we just get in the way sometimes.  When given resources of proper nutrition, adequate exercise, and mental well-being humans are capable of long, vibrant lives.
